SIBU: Veteran politician Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh has won the Bawang Assan state constituency six times in a row.
He won the seat five times when he was with the government and during last year’s state election, he had triumphed as an Opposition representative.
For this general election, Wong, 80, is seeking to capture the Sibu parliamentary seat. It is his first time contesting for a federal seat.
Once again, he is leaving his fate to the 100,000 over voters.
“I think people are wise enough to choose who they want to represent them (in Parliament).
“I’m not at a disadvantage although I am in the Opposition. I believe I can also win,” he told reporters yesterday.
Wong, the Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president, is locked in a three-cornered fight for Sibu.
His rivals are the incumbent representative, Oscar Ling (Pakatan Harapan), and Clarence Ting Ing Horh (Gabungan Parti Sarawak).
During a ceramah on Sunday, Wong addressed questions on why he had not retired from politics.
“I want to fight to restore the state’s right under MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963),” said Wong.
He has been Bawang Assan assemblyman since September 1991.
