GE15 an opportunity to participate in democratic process, says Sarawak churches' association

KUCHING: Voters in Sarawak, especially Christians, are encouraged to vote in the 15th General Election (GE15) and participate in the democratic process.

In a pastoral letter, the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) said GE15 was an opportunity to democratically elect leaders for the next term of office.

"ACS, as a religious organisation, does not endorse any political party, but encourages every citizen to pray for a safe election and vote according to one's conscience as a moral responsibility to the nation and God," chairman Archbishop Simon Poh said on Saturday (Nov 12).

He added that young people who were eligible to vote should realise that they are contributing to Malaysia by casting their ballots.

He reminded Christians to exercise their moral duty to vote on Nov 19.

"By casting our votes, we hold our government and candidates accountable to walk the talk; fulfil promises made to the rakyat; work for the common good and well-being of all; defend religious freedom for all races and faiths; and ensure mutual respect and acceptance, harmony and unity in diversity in Malaysia," read the letter.

The letter also advised voters to consider the political parties and integrity of individual candidates on issues such as development, citizen's rights, freedom of religion and welfare.

"We urge you to stand up, uphold the common good of our nation and choose wisely.

"May your vote be a blessing for Sarawak, the land of unity and harmony in our nation Malaysia," it added.
