SELANGAU: Sarawakians have been told to choose a responsible government and not one that cancels projects.
“I agree with Premier (Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) that the government that is chosen must be the one that is responsible. Not a government that cancels projects that benefit the people,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob at the launch of the RM588mil Selangau section of the Pan Borneo Highway project yesterday.
He said there was a difference between the Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional governments.
“The difference is that while they cancelled projects, we increased the allocation (for projects) for the benefit of the rakyat.
“Thus, I agree with the premier that we should not make the wrong decision. If we choose the wrong government, the one that will suffer is the people.
“So, I hope you will make the right decision for us by ensuring the government that we form is capable of looking after the interests of the people,” he said.
During the 22 months under Pakatan Harapan, he said they cancelled four bridge projects and Phase 2 of the Pan Borneo Highway.
Ismail Sabri said that should Barisan Nasional form the government post-GE15 and he remained the Prime Minister, Sarawak would be his top priority in development.
“As the chairman of the MA63 special committee, I will ensure whatever is hanging and not solved must be resolved for the people of the state,” he said.
Later, speaking at a press conference, Ismail Sabri said he was confident that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would support Barisan to form the next government.
“We are confident of forming the new government with the support of GPS. Our cooperation with GPS is certain. Though GPS is not in the coalition, we have a long history of understanding each other.
“We understand the aspiration of the people of Sarawak, as we are close to them.
“Until now, we are still together. For example, GPS was with us when I was in the Opposition and did not join PH, which was then the government. So when we formed the new government, GPS was also with us. Our collaboration will undoubtedly continue,” he said.
Afterwards, Abang Johari, who was sitting next to Ismail Sabri, jokingly said that “both sides are dating now and will soon akad nikah (married)”.
In his speech at the function, Abang Johari said GPS wanted a stable Federal Government.
“We hope YAB (Ismail Sabri) will form a stable government after the election so that we can develop the country. I congratulate YAB as our economy has improved (with) over 14% GDP growth. This is a good sign.
“Therefore, we need a strong, stable government supported by people of all races and religions,” he said.
