GE15: Don't be swayed by 'fun' social media posts, Johor MB warns young voters

LABIS: Voters, especially young and those voting for the first time, are advised not to let "fun" social media content distract them from making the right decision on Nov 19, says Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

The Johor Mentri Besar said such campaign strategy and political talks might distract people from examining the real issues when deciding who to vote for.

"Yes, some of (the content put out) might be fun and people may get distracted but at the end of the day, voters should think deeply and look in their hearts to see which party is offering the country stability.

"Why is stability so important? It is only with stability then we can bring in investments and offer job opportunities.

"Barisan Nasional is the only party offering stability - the other parties are not doing so because they cannot and that is why they resort to fear-mongering and scare tactics," said Onn Hafiz, who is also Johor Barisan Nasional election operations director.

He was speaking to the press when meeting the Chinese community with Barisan’s Labis candidate Datuk Chua Tee Yong at Dewan Yong Hock Kiong here on Wednesday (Nov 16).

He was asked to comment on how certain political parties had engaged attractive social media influencers to campaign for them on platforms including TikTok.

In his speech, Onn Hafiz said he was touched to see the hall packed with Labis-folk despite it being a weekday afternoon.

He also got the crowd clapping and smiling when he wove some mandarin phrases into his speech, including "wo shui shi zhun bei he ni men yi qi rang rou fo qian jing" which meant "I am ever-ready to be with you to move Johor forward" inline with the state’s Maju Johor tagline.

Chua is challenging incumbent MP Pang Hok Liong from Pakatan Harapan-DAP and Alvin Chang (Perikatan Nasional-Bersatu) in a three-cornered fight to win the hearts of the 49,802 voters in the constituency.
