GE15: Three arrested for distributing election campaign brochures at Lumut naval base

IPOH: Three men have been arrested for distributing election campaign brochures within the Royal Malaysian Navy base.

Perak police chief Datuk Comm Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the three men, aged between 19 and 33 years old, were arrested by the navy's provost (military police) during their patrols on Tuesday (Nov 15).

"They were arrested near Block A8 RKTLDM for distributing the brochures for a political party.

"The naval base is gazetted as a restricted area," he said in a statement Wednesday (Nov 16).

"The case will be investigated under Section 24B of the Election Offences Act," he added.

Comm Mohd Yusri said all parties that were contesting in the 15th General Election needed to adhere to the law.

"Campaigns are not allowed in restricted areas.

"Those who fail to comply can be jailed or fined," he said, adding that the police also extended its thanks to parties that had cooperated with them during the campaign period.
