PETALING JAYA: More than a thousand people in Selangor were moved to temporary evacuation centres (PPS) due to the downpour early yesterday.
On Wednesday, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) recorded 129 flood victims in the state from Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam.
The overnight downpour caused flooding in 83 localities, including parts of Klang, Shah Alam, Puchong, Sepang, Semenyih and Kajang.
As rescue efforts spun into high gear by 4pm yesterday, Nadma recorded that a total of 1,275 people, including 300 families, had been moved to temporary shelters.
At the same time, Sungai Rasau in Meru and Sungai Binjai in Taman Desa Kemuning; various portions of Sungai Langat in Bukit Changgang, Dengkil and Jenderam Hilir; as well as Sungai Selangor in Rantau Panjang recorded dangerous levels.
The Social Welfare Department also opened 14 new evacuation centres in seven districts – Klang, Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Sabak Bernam and Sepang.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said it deployed 130 men, 20 boats and 19 fire engines to move people to safety.
Several councils also dispatched response teams to the affected areas to monitor the situation and potential hotspots.
Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said all disaster and security-related agencies, as well as state and district disaster management committees, had been ordered to be on alert.
Meanwhile, 15 stations of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage recorded water level readings above the danger mark in Sarawak, Pahang, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
