CHERAS: Bandar Tun Razak candidate Datuk Kamarudin Jaafar (pic) might have violated the law for wearing a lapel pin with his coalition's logo while at a polling centre here.
The Perikatan Nasional incumbent was wearing a pin that read “Undilah Perikatan Nasional” followed by a cross
He was also seen speaking to voters and indicating that he is the Perikatan candidate when he visited the SK Seri Anggerik, Taman Len Sen, Kuala Lumpur.
Section 26(g) of the Election Offences Act 1954 states that no person shall wear, hold or carry any form or type of clothing, head covering, ornament, rosette, water bottle or umbrella on which the name of a candidate or the name, emblem or symbol of any political party is printed or imprinted.
The restriction applies within a distance of fifty metres from the limits of any polling station and in a polling station.
If found guilty of an offence under the Act, a person may face imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year, a RM5,000 fine or both upon conviction.
Speaking to reporters, Kamarudin said that while clothes bearing the party logo are prohibited, his lapel pin is allowed and did not comment any further.
Meanwhile, Election Commission officers at the site said that they were alerted to the matter, and one said that it would be handled by the Commission's headquarters.
In GE15, Kamarudin is facing Barisan Nasional's Datuk Chew Yin Keen (MCA) and Pakatan Harapan's Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
