PETALING JAYA: Women groups hope that the newly appointed Women, Family and Community Development Minister will continue improving laws and women's rights in Malaysia.
Women's Aid Organisation advocacy director Abinaya Mohan said they hoped and trusted that the newly appointed Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri would look into closing existing gaps in protection against violence for women and bolster initiatives to improve gender equality in Malaysia.
“We hope that the Minister and her team will continue the ministry's engagement with grassroots and civil society organisations working on gender equality, women and children's rights in Malaysia.
“We look forward to supporting her and the ministry in making Malaysia a better country for women,” she said.
All Women’s Action Society (Awam) information and communications officer Jernell Tan commended Nancy, who has been a crucial ally in women's rights, not only supporting the passing of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill, but also having a keen interest in gender-responsive budgeting.
She said Nancy has also shown support towards women during her tenure as the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister by implementing reskilling and upskilling programmes for women craft entrepreneurs in the tourism landscape.
“We look forward to working closely with Datuk Nancy Shukri on the operationalisation of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Tribunal and the passing of the Anti-Stalking Laws,” she said.
