INDIAN residents in Gombak, Selangor, are disappointed after losing 3.2ha of land meant for a cemetery which was promised to them, Malaysia Nanban reported.

Malaysia Tamilar Munnetra Kazhagam president Sri Ramesh said the state had originally allocated 1.6ha of cemetery land in the district for the Indian community in 2005.

As the land was needed to expand a Muslim cemetery, the state government then allocated 4.9ha for the Hindu community as replacement.

However, this allocation was apparently not gazetted which resulted in farming and housing development being approved on the land, leaving just 1.6ha for the Hindu cemetery, he said.

Sri Ramesh said they had submitted a memorandum to the Selangor Mentri Besar on the matter.

> The daily also reported that a woman in Tiruchengode, Tamil Nadu, India, has taken her life after being harassed for dowry by her husband and in-laws.

Vasumathi Atthiappan, 23, who married fellow engineer Vinod, 23, in an arranged marriage on Oct 30, soon began complaining that Vinod was verbally abusing and harassing her for dowry payments.

On Nov 30, Vasumathi decided to take her own life.
