Floods: Multi-agency approach should serve Sarawak well, says Deputy Premier

KUCHING: The Sarawak disaster management committee and relevant government agencies are on high alert for the possibility of floods during the current north-east monsoon season, says Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Deputy Premier said the state was taking a multi-agency approach to prepare for floods, with local communities and villages involved as well.

"The Fire and Rescue Department has briefed me that all their equipment and personnel are in place to face floods.

"They are working with other agencies including the police and Civil Defence Force, while village development and security committees also play an important role in flood preparation.

"If everyone does their part, we will get through the challenge of floods together," he told reporters after launching a community learning centre at the Batu Lintang fire station here on Wednesday (Dec 14).

Dr Sim also said the state disaster management committee was ready for floods with its organisational structure and procedures in place.

"Everyone has been briefed with the necessary information. Agencies like the Meteorological Department and police are constantly reporting on the situation, so we know what is happening," he said.

He added that in flood-prone villages, Civil Defence Force personnel were currently on 24-hour standby with boats.

"The local councils will also continue to do their part by clearing drains," he said.

On the community learning centre, Dr Sim said it was a good initiative by the Fire and Rescue Department to educate the public, including children, on fire safety and prevention.

"Fire prevention is everyone's responsibility. Education efforts like this can potentially save lives and property," he said.
