Floods: Number of victims in Johor climbs to 129


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has risen to 129 after Kota Tinggi became the second district hit by floods.

In a statement on Wednesday (Dec 14), the state Civil Defence Force said Kampung Baru Sungai Mas and Taman Desaru Utama in Kota Tinggi have been affected.

“Some 26 victims from seven families in Kampung Baru Sungai Mas have been relocated to Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas while 42 victims from 11 families in Taman Desaru Utama have been moved to Dewan Muafakat Bandar Penawar.

“Both temporary flood relief centres have been opened from 9.30am Wednesday,”the statement read.

It added that in Segamat, 34 villagers from Kampung Seberang Batu Badak and Kampung Batu 5 were seeking shelter at Balairaya Kampung Batu Badak while 27 villagers from Kampung Kuala Pilah were relocated to Balairaya Kampung Kuala Paya.

Based on reports from the Malaysian Meteorological Department, continuous rain would hit Mersing, Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Kulai and Johor Baru.

The statement added that Sungai Muar near Kampung Awat and Buloh Kasap in Segamat has reached the warning level while Sungai Endau near Kampung Labong in Segamat is at the alert level.
