King rejected taking salary since start of Covid-19 pandemic, says Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: The King had rejected taking a salary even before me, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"In truth, the King rejected taking a salary since the Covid-19 pandemic and it was done much earlier than me.

"The King has not received a salary since the pandemic," the Prime Minister said in a press conference after chairing the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (Dec 14).

He said that this was a contribution made by the King in light of the economic hardship faced by the rakyat.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said he brought the matter up in order to clarify his recent announcement that he would not be taking any salary following his appointment as Prime Minister.

Anwar had previously clarified that he would not be taking any salary as Finance Minister as there was only one salary given to a minister.

On Dec 4, Anwar announced that Cabinet ministers had agreed to a 20% pay cut until Malaysia reaches economic recovery.

He said this was part of their gesture in acknowledging the tough times faced by many people currently.

The pay cut will be implemented as long as Malaysia continues to recover economically.
