Batang Kali landslide: Death toll reaches 21, says Zahid

HULU SELANGOR: The death toll for the landslide at Father's Organic Farm has reached 21 victims, says Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Deputy Prime Minister said authorities are still searching for 12 other victims.

"My deepest condolences to the families of the victims who died in this tragedy.

"We pray the remaining victims are safely rescued," he told reporters at the landslide command centre on Friday (Dec 16).

Ahmad Zahid said the SAR operation is still ongoing and various agencies are doing their best to search for the remaining victims.

"Various technologies and machinery are being used as well as K9 tracking dogs," he said.

As chairman for the Federal Natural Disaster Committee, Ahmad Zahid said he will continue to monitor the development at the landslide site.

He said the government called on any campsite located near rivers or hill slopes to cease operation temporarily during the school holidays period.

"The Meteorological Department has stated that heavy rain will start on Saturday (Dec 17), especially in the East Coast and it could cause rivers to overflow.

"Learn from what happened here. I hope all parents, teachers and students will cease camping activities at locations near rivers or hill slopes. We don't want any untoward incidents to occur," he said.
