Batang Kali landslide: Incident to be investigated if work-related activities involved, says HR Minister

PETALING JAYA: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has been tasked to conduct investigations into the landslide at a campsite in Batang Kali, Selangor should there be any indications it was caused by any work-related activities, says Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu.

In a statement Friday (Dec 16), the Human Resources Minister said that he had instructed DOSH officers to investigate once they are given the go-ahead to access the scene, as search and rescue operations were ongoing.

“Based on early information, I have been informed that the incident is outside DOSH jurisdiction, based on the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514), as the case is categorised as a natural disaster.

“However, DOSH will investigate further to determine if any workplace activities caused the incident once they are allowed access to the site,” he said.

Sivakumar added that the ministry takes every workplace-related injury seriously, including dangerous incidents in the tourism sector.

“The ministry, through the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health and DOSH, were committed to improving the standard of occupational safety and health in the country including the tourism industry.”

A campsite in Kampung Kuantan, Batang Kali was struck by a landslide in the early hours of Friday morning.

As of 5pm, 19 people have been confirmed dead, with 14 people still missing.
