Batang Kali landslide: PM orders multi-agency SAR op, will head to site at night

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will head to the disaster area at Father's Organic Farm in Batang Kali on Friday (Dec 16) night.

In a statement, Anwar expressed his concern and shock over the landslide which took place at the road connecting Batang Kali to Genting Highlands.

"I have received information from the Local Government Development minister, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister and the Selangor Mentri Besar on updates related to the search and rescue (SAR) mission.

"I have ordered that SAR be carried out smoothly and systematically by all government departments.

"I was informed that the ministers involved will head to the location this morning.

"I have advised them not to bother the SAR workers during their visit.

"Please pray for the people so that this mission can be made easier," he said.

Eight people have been confirmed dead so far in the landslide which hit early Friday morning.

According to a tweet by the National Disaster Management Agency, seven people were also injured while 53 had been found safe.

SAR efforts are ongoing at the site.

In a tweet, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said he was on route to the landslide disaster area.

"I have received the terrible news regarding the landslide that occurred at a camping site in Jalan Batang Kali, Gohtong Jaya.

"I am on route to the scene, he tweeted Friday morning.
