Batang Kali landslide: Teachers from SJKC Mun Choong among victims


PETALING JAYA: A school holiday outing at the campsite ended in tragedy for a group of teachers from SJKC Mun Choong in Kuala Lumpur.

The group of 23 people, including children, are among the victims of the landslide that hit the Father's Organic Farm campsite at Batang Kali early Friday (Dec 16).

The school's parent-teacher association chairman U Chin Ong said that the teachers, their friends and relatives organised the camping trip and had checked in at the campsite on Wednesday (Dec 14).

"The holiday trip was in conjunction with the school holidays and it was not a school trip.

"Those who joined included school teachers, parents and children for 23 people in total," he told Oriental Daily on Friday.

U also told Berita Harian, when met at the Hulu Yam Baru police station, that the group was supposed to check out and go home on Friday.

He said that based on the information he received, several teachers were rescued and rushed to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment.

"There were also some who were sent to the police station to be treated by HKL's medical staff.

"I rushed to the police station after receiving the news."

As of 1pm, U said about six people from the group have been rescued, as operations to locate other victims are ongoing.

A total of 16 fatalities have been reported so far.
