Nearly 300 flood hotspots in Penang


GEORGE TOWN: A total of 281 flood hotspots has been identified in Penang, says state Fire and Rescue Department director Saadon Mokhtar.

He said 55 locations were identified in the northeast, 45 in the southwest, 56 in north Seberang Prai, 86 in central Seberang Prai, and 39 in south Seberang Prai.

Among the locations considered high-risk are Datuk Keramat, Batu Maung, Sungai Nibong, Teluk Bahang, Bayan Baru, Kanpung Nelayan in Teluk Kumbar, Mak Mandin, Lubuk Meriam, Kuala Juru, Padang Lalang, Simpang Ampat, Nibong Tebal and Jawi.

Saadon said these locations are being monitored by his department and rescuers are ready to be deployed there in any emergency.

The rescuers comprise about 1,700 operations officers and firemen from 20 fire stations and several voluntary fire brigades in the state, he said when contacted yesterday.

He added that his men will act as first responder teams to carry out rescues and move victims to the flood relief centres (PPS).

The department also has 24 amphibious vehicles and 55 multifunction vehicles to be used during floods and rescue operations.
