PUTRAJAYA: With the unity government agreement signed, the possibility of another political manoeuvre to topple the government – like the Sheraton Move of February 2020 – would be low, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications and Digital Minister said the agreement must be read together with the anti-hopping legislation.
“We need to read two different documents simultaneously, which were the recently signed unity government agreement and the amended Constitution that does not allow lawmakers to switch parties,” he told reporters after the agreement signing ceremony at Perdana Putra here on Friday (Dec 16).
Fahmi added that the agreement would put a stop to the political impasse that started with the hung Parliament following the 15th General Election.
“The event today is the peak of the whole political situation. It is also a good signal before the first parliamentary sitting on Monday (Dec 19).
“We could see the close relationship among all the party leaders present here today. Our focus is to help solve problems faced by the rakyat,” he said.
Five political parties and coalitions signed the agreement to form a unity government led by Pakatan Harapan chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Other leaders present at the ceremony were Pakatan secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail; Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir; Gabungan Rakyat Sabah chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and secretary-general Datuk Masidi Manjun; Gabungan Parti Sarawak chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg and secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi; and Warisan president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and secretary-general Datuk Loretto Padua.
