In 2018, Johari won the Gurun state seat and was three-term Sungai Petani MP from 2008 to 2022, but did not contest in the recent 15th General Election which saw Kedah only holding elections for Parliamentary level.

With the upcoming state elections to be held soon in Kedah, it is uncertain if there would be a by-election to fill Johari's state seat.
