PETALING JAYA: It was a historic day at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Dec 19), as 95 of the 222 MPs in the house are first timers attending proceedings as parliamentarians.
The sitting also marks Tambun MP Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s first sitting in the hall as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Amongst the new faces, there are also experienced leaders being sworn in, signifying how their exemplary service to constituents has seen them being given the people's mandate time and time again.
One of them was MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic), who was sworn in as an MP during Dewan Rakyat proceedings.
"Swearing in as an MP at the first meeting of the 15th Parliament session. I will continue to give my best as an elected representative for Ayer Hitam," he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Dr Wee retained the Ayer Hitam seat in the 15th general election where he received 18,911 votes, giving him a majority of 2,963 over his closest rival, Pakatan Harapan’s Sheikh Umar Ali Bagharib.
Sheikh Umar received 15,948 votes while Perikatan Nasional’s Muhammad Syafiq A. Aziz garnered 11,833 votes.
Dr Wee has held the Ayer Hitam seat for five terms since 2004.
