Penang suspends all outdoor activities in high-risk areas after MetMalaysia warning

GEORGE TOWN: All outdoor activities have been stalled in the state during the North-East monsoon period.

The Penang Island City Council on Monday (Dec 19) said in a press statement that all leisure activities such as hiking, climbing, camping and other activities in high-risk areas such as slope areas, beaches, river sources (kepala air) and areas with the risk of flooding were to be halted immediately following a warning issued by the Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

"People are advised to be alert and abide by the instructions above.

"It is important to take note of the weather forecasts and warnings issued by MetMalaysia to prevent any untoward incidents," the statement read.

The council then urged everyone to prioritise their personal safety and the safety of their family.

MetMalaysia issued a warning on Dec 16, regarding the weather condition forecast of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds that are expected to continue until Dec 20.

It was then reported on Sunday (Dec 18) that the current monsoon experienced in the country is expected to last until Dec 24, potentially bringing strong winds, big waves and persistent rainfall in the northern, east coast states of the peninsula and east of Sabah.
