KUALA TERENGGANU: As the weather cleared up a little in the east coast, many villagers in the state were left counting their losses due to the damage caused by the massive floods over the last week.
At its height, the number of evacuees hit a high of 33,942 people from 9,739 families.
They were placed in 256 relief centres across all eight districts – Kemaman, Besut, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu and Marang, according to the state disaster management committee.
As at yesterday, there were still 8,540 people taking shelter, with all flood relief centres in the Kemaman district closed.
There were also 63 relief centres still operating in seven other districts.
A total of 15 fire incidents also occurred in the state during the five days of severe flooding from Dec 19, mostly caused by short circuits.
Terengganu Fire and Rescue Department director Md Hilman Abd Rashidu said the short circuits were due to faulty electrical appliances and wiring that had been exposed to the floodwaters.
“It is common for flood victims to immediately use the electrical appliances when they get home without checking the condition of the wiring.
“Electrical items that have not been completely dried can cause short circuits,” he said.
In Kelantan, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry had distributed 12.4 metric tonnes of basic food items to more than 4,000 flood victims in the state, its director Azman Ismail said.
“The flood relief mission by the Kelantan (branch of the ministry) that started on Dec 20 will continue as long as there are temporary evacuation centres in operation,” he added.
