Three missing in Sipitang, Sandakan during fishing trips

Firemen carry out search operations for two missing men in the Seguntor River in Sabah's Sandakan district on Sunday (Dec 26).

KOTA KINABALU: Three men were reported missing while on fishing trips in Sipitang and Sandakan.

In the first case, a man is believed to be missing after he failed to return home from a fishing trip at a river mouth in Sabah's southwestern Sipitang district on Sunday (Dec 25) evening.

Firemen received the distress call from family members of Nordin Yusof at 10.47am Monday (Dec 26) after failing to return home from a fishing trip around the river mouth of Kampung Merintaman in Sipitang.

Sipitang Fire and Rescue Services station chief Calvin Joe Jeafery said search operations have been launched for the victim who is believed to have been fishing during bad weather.

"We are continuing our search for him," he said.

On the east coast of the Sandakan district, firemen and other agencies are conducting a search for two men reported missing along the Seguntur river.

The department's spokesman said the two men, who have yet to be identified, were reported missing 11am today after they went out fishing a day earlier.

"We are carrying out a surface search for them," he said.

Sabah's weather conditions remain bad over the last four days and a high tide phenomenon has also been wreaking havoc on coastal villages in Pitas, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu.

More than 100 houses have been damaged or destroyed with 800 over people evacuated.
