Floods: Six relief centres in Pitas closed, one active in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: Only one temporary relief centre located in Sandakan housing 688 victims remains active, as six shelters in Pitas district were deactivated as of 4pm on Wednesday (Dec 28).

Sabah disaster management committee said a total of 766 housed at Kampung Mempakad hall, Kg Pinggan-Pinggan agropolitan hall, Kg Salimpodon open hall, Kg Luntuk SIB church, Kg Rosob open hall and SMK Pinggan-Pinggan hall in Pitas, were all allowed to go home after weather condition improved.

The evacuees in the district were initially relocated to the shelters since Friday last week (Dec 23) due to the king tide phenomenon, while the Sandakan relief centre in SK Sungai Anib 2 was activated on Sunday.

Earlier on Wednesday, two shelters have already been activated in Kota Belud housing a total of 135 flood victims after it was declared safe to go home following receding water levels.
