Sibu cops nab motorcyclist who wielded knife in public


SIBU: Police have arrested a man for brandishing a knife at passers-by along Jalan Pulau here on Tuesday (Dec 27).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the arrest was made after a video clip began circulating on social media, showing the suspect riding a motorcycle and waving the knife at people on the road.

"We detected the 16-second video at about 5pm," he said here on Wednesday (Dec 28), adding that the Criminal Investigation Department swung into action immediately.

They traced the man to Jalan Bukit Assek and arrested him at 9pm.

A knife and motorcycle were also seized in the arrest.

ACP Zulkipli said the case was being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for having an offensive weapon in a public place.

The section provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and no fewer than six strokes of the cane upon conviction.
