KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning of continuous rain in several parts of Sarawak for two days starting tomorrow.
According to the weather alert, continuous rain is expected in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu and Mukah.
Meanwhile, two temporary relief centres in flood-hit northern Sabah were closed amid improving weather conditions, although victims of the king tide phenomenon remain at shelters.
State disaster relief committee secretariat said that SJK(C) Chung Hwa and SK Pekan Kota Belud relief centres in Kota Belud district were closed with all the flood victims sent back to their homes.
However, evacuees of coastal villages in the districts of Pitas and Sandakan remained in seven temporary shelters.
The secretariat said 298 families involving 1,454 people were in six relief centres in Pitas and one temporary shelter in Sandakan.
Over 100 wooden stilt houses in the squatter colony of Kampung Forest in Sandakan were destroyed by tides on Christmas Eve and most residents sought shelter at SK Sungai Anib 2.
Authorities are remaining vigilant during the current king tide phenomenon that is expected to last till the end of the year.
King tides occur when Earth is closest to both the moon and Sun twice a year during the Winter and Summer solstices. The tides can rise at least 30cm above the normal average high-tide levels for the year.
In HULU BESUT in Terengganu, the Finance Ministry is mulling the idea of building Rumah Mesra Rakyat for flood victims, said its deputy minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
He said those whose houses were completely destroyed by floods could apply for the housing programme.
