A BEAR has been seen in a Kelantan village, causing much anxiety among the 200 Orang Asli residents, Kosmo reported.

Hasmadi Ghazali, 44, said he was having a relaxing evening at home with his family last week when he heard a strange noise outside the house.

“I peeked through a window and saw a bear heading towards a durian tree.”

He called out to some neighbours, who used spears and knives to scare off the bear, which fled to a nearby forest.

Housewife Norsiah Along, 48, said the appearance of the bear had worried them as they feared for the safety of their children.

During the durian season, she said the Orang Asli children would go out to look for the fruit every morning.

“When we saw the huge bear, we became afraid of encountering it.”

Now, she said the residents would move in groups if they wanted to go to the plantation.

Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) deputy director-general (planning and management) Saiful Zahlan Muhamad Azmi said they would discuss the matter with the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

“We don’t want wild animals to affect crops and threaten the safety of Orang Asli villages,” he said.

Utusan Malaysia reported that the smell of cooking was among the things that people found upsetting about their neighbours in Klang, Selangor.

Others complained about noise, cigarette smell, flower pots or cars obstructing them, putting out clothes and shoes to dry on the wall, and playing of musical instruments.

According to the Klang Municipal Council, it had resolved about 90% of the 180 complaints received between January and November.

The council said the grievances might seem trivial but people should upkeep their areas and be considerate to others.
