KUALA TERENGGANU: The first day of school for the third semester went smoothly in Terengganu.
No schools, including those in the flood-affected districts, were closed, said state Education Department director Abdul Muie Ngah.
He said clean-up works had been carried out swiftly with the cooperation of the school administration, the local community and non-governmental organisations.
He said among the schools affected by floods, 17 were in the Hulu Terengganu district, followed by Dungun (11), Setiu (10), Besut (nine), Kuala Nerus (eight), Kuala Terengganu (eight), Kemaman (seven) and Marang (four).
“The number of students involved was 5,386, but all of them were able to return to school today,” he told Bernama after visiting SK Pulau Rusa, one of the flood-hit schools here, yesterday.
Abdul Muie said many school facilities, such as desks and chairs, were damaged in the floods and that the department was evaluating the situation to assess the losses.
He added that some of the damaged furniture had been replaced by using the excess inventory from other schools.
“What is important is that the students are able to start their school session.
“Those who do not have school uniforms can wear any decent clothes of their own for the time being,” he said.
On Dec 18, Terengganu was hit by a massive flood that forced more than 40,000 people to be evacuated to relief centres in eight districts.
