Arson or embers could be cause of second Jakel blaze

SHAH ALAM: The Fire and Rescue Department is looking at arson or embers as possible causes of the latest fire at the Wisma Jakel building here.

Its Selangor director Datuk Norazam Khamis said a detailed investigation of the fire, which destroyed 16 premises there, would take at least 14 days.

"In that time, we will also get the laboratory analysis results from samples taken during our inspection of the building.

"We have yet to determine the cause of the fire so far," he told reporters at the scene on Tuesday (Jan 3).

He said the investigation would focus on whether or not there had been a deliberate setting of the second fire, or if it was caused by embers from the earlier fire.

"The investigation includes (talking to) witnesses.

"We also deployed the K9 unit to assist.

"Two dogs are being used to detect any petrol, oil or coal residue," he said, adding that a forward control centre manned by a team of 10 had been set up to monitor the area in case of additional fire risks.

He stressed that members of the public were not allowed to enter the area.

"Only firefighters will carry out the removal of items, including fabrics, from the premises.

"The fire has been extinguished but comprehensive monitoring measures are continuing," he said.

On Sunday (Jan 1), a fire razed the popular garment and textile retailer's branch here, causing estimated losses of almost RM100mil.

It was extinguished at 3.07am.
