SOP at Pasir Salak circuit could have been tighter, says Saarani

IPOH: The standard operating procedures (SOP) during the recent motorsports event in Perak that saw one death could have been tighter, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Perak Mentri Besar said in any sporting events that have high risks, SOP are usually tight to prevent potential incidents.

On Saturday (Jan 31), a race car lost control on the Dato Sagor Circuit at Pasir Salak and hit a spectator, who was killed.

"The state has not received the report about the incident as it is still being investigated by the police.

"Those who are not on duty should not be on the race track, unlike those with passes like a marshal, technician or photographers," he said in a press conference after presenting incentives to Perak's 2022 Malaysia Para Games (Para Sukma) participants at a hotel here on Thursday (Jan 5).

"Whether or not the man should have been there is a question to be answered," he said, adding that the state sympathised with the victim's family.

The 32-year-old spectator from Kamunting died while receiving treatment at Hospital Changkat Melintang in Lambor Kanan after he was struck during the CCT Battle of Champions race.

The victim reportedly died from head injuries and bleeding in the lungs.

On incentives for the para athletes, Saarani said about RM240,000 was disbursed to those who won medals in the games, held in Kuala Lumpur in November.

He said 39 athletes from Perak won a total of 54 medals, including 25 golds, setting five new records in the process.
