KOTA KINABALU: Two men were rescued in waters off Kudat in separate incidents over the past few days.
In the first case, a man had been trying to swim to shore after his boat capsized in waters off Teluk Marudu, off Kudat on Wednesday (Jan 4) evening.
He had been clinging on to dear life and swimming for about an hour before navy authorities noticed him waving at them.
The Sandakan navy base, in a statement, said that their officials who were on board KD Todak had noticed the man waving at them.
"Our men got him up on board. He was very weak and was given preliminary treatment by medical officials on board," it added.
The man identified as Radmay Asmadul Bakar had earlier sent his 15-year-old daughter to the school hostel at SMK Telaga, Pitas and was on his way home when strong waves struck.
His boat started to crack and leak.
The man was later handed over to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for further action.
On Friday (Jan 6), firemen received a distress call about a capsized boat in waters off Tajau Laut, Kudat at 11.14am.
State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations, Misran Bisara, said the victim, Abd Rahman Tumai, 54, a fisherman, was found clinging onto plastic barrels used to fill fish.
His boat had capsized when it hit a rock while on his way home from fishing.
"Our men rescued the victim, and helped to check on his condition before sending him home to Kg Gumpa, Kudat," he said.
Misran said the operations ceased at 2pm.
