Bomb that killed waiter was detonated remotely


KUALA LUMPUR: The home-made bomb that killed a waiter at Pandan Indah here was detonated remotely in a murder bid.

Selangor acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk S. Sasikala Devi said the two suspects, who are a couple, were believed to be in the vicinity of the explosion during the incident.

“Yes, we believe the bomb was detonated remotely,” she told reporters yesterday.

She said police have, so far, recorded statements from 36 individuals in connection with the case.

“I can confirm that the motive of the murder was due to personal reasons.

“Both suspects are still under remand for further investigations,” she said, adding that police were trying to determine how the suspects had learnt the bomb-making skill.

DCP Sasikala Devi said various tools and equipment including some fireworks and blades were seized from the suspects’ home.

On Dec 29, a 28-year-old waiter at a restaurant in Pandan Indah was killed in an explosion at 8.55pm, when he inspected a package that contained the home-made bomb, which was placed on his car.

He was rushed to Hospital Ampang, where he succumbed to his severe injuries.

Investigations led police to the arrest of a couple on Jan 3.

The 33-year-old man and his 30-year-old wife were detained at a house in Serdang, Kedah following a raid by a CID team from the Ampang Jaya district police headquarters.
