Bus driver killed, eight passengers injured in three-vehicle crash near Kulai

KULAI: A bus driver was killed and eight others injured in an accident involving three vehicles at KM32.5 North–South Expressway (north bound) near here.

Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said the police received a report on the incident at 9.30pm on Monday (Jan 9).

“The 65-year-old bus driver suffered serious injuries to the head and body and was pronounced dead at the location.

“Eight bus passengers also suffered minor injuries, while the drivers of the other two vehicles - a lorry and a car - were unharmed,” he said in a statement here Tuesday (Jan 10).

Investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the lorry crashed into the road divider in the middle of the highway.

“The bus, which was heading in the same direction, did not manage to avoid the lorry and rammed into the back of it.

“The bus then veered onto the left side of the road, and another incoming car also failed to evade the lorry,” he explained.

The vehicles will be brought to Senai Puspakom for inspection. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

Meanwhile, Kulai Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Fairuz Helmi Mohd Ali said that a total of 22 personnel were deployed to the scene to help with the rescue operation.

“There were nine people inside the bus, including the bus driver. Those injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment.

“The body of the bus driver, identified as Ismail Tapah, has been handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
