PM: M’sia will back Indonesia fully when it leads Asean

JAKARTA: Malaysia has given its assurance that it will support Indonesia during the latter’s Asean leadership tenure, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said he would give his full support to the neighbouring nation to ensure that its leadership would be effective.

Indonesia takes over the Asean chairmanship this year from Cambodia.

“Asean is a bit ‘gloomy’ now. I will give my guarantee that Malaysia will support Indonesia’s leadership to ensure its effectiveness and whatever we do, we will do it together,” Anwar said during the question and answer session at the CTCROP Leadership Forum here yesterday. The forum was hosted by Anwar’s close friend, Chairul Tanjung – the chairperson of CT Corp, a major conglomerate of Indonesia.

Anwar also hoped that the cooperation in various sectors between the two countries would be further improved to support both economies.

He noted that the collaboration on palm oil could ensure the sustainability of the industry.

“Our cooperation should be closer. We need to form a joint strategy on palm oil and if we are united, we can do it via the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries,” he added.

He also shared his vision for Malaysia.

“I want Malaysia to be a democratic country with fair principles. I also want the people to know Anwar as someone who tried to clean the country from the scourge of corruption and abuse.

“I want to show that there is a Malay Muslim leader out there who is sincere in fighting for the plight of all rakyat. He may succeed to a certain extent or he may not, but at least there is some recognition that he tried his best,” Anwar added.
