Nation’s crime index down

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s crime index saw a drop of 2,155 cases or 4.1% last year compared to the previous year, says Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani (pic).

The Inspector-General of Police said a total of 50,819 cases were recorded between January and December last year compared to 52,974 cases in 2021.

He announced that the number of commercial crime cases also showed a slight decline with 30,536 cases recorded last year compared to 31,490 cases in 2021.

“This is a testament of the hard work and dedication of the police nationwide,” he said at the monthly assembly of Bukit Aman yesterday.

Acryl Sani said the force had proven its dedication and commitment in combating the drug menace by making more arrests last year.

He revealed that the number of people arrested in connection with drug-related offences rose from 129,654 in 2021 to 163,740 last year while individuals detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985 saw a hike from 1,186 in 2021 to 1,261 last year.

On smuggling, Acryl Sani said the cases recorded a slight increase from 2,811 in 2021 to 2,866 last year.

“Police arrested 4,840 people and seized an array of items worth RM445.9mil in 2021 while in 2022, we made 5,945 arrests and a seizure of RM495.6mil worth of items,” he added.

The country’s top cop has reminded his men of the force’s three main focus – strengthening integrity, improving service delivery and carrying out government policies for the benefit of the people.

“We are a reflection of the firmness and transparency of law enforcement.

“Strengthening integrity must be the main principal of all and we must carry out our duty professionally based on the law,” he added.

Acryl Sani also advised the men in blue to enhance their knowledge, expertise and skills.

“We should always be ready to serve. Society and the police are inseparable, after all,” he said.
