PETALING JAYA: Malaysian brands have now evolved into global brands, putting Malaysia on the world map for quality brands.

Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) strategic planning division senior director Raja Badrulnizam Raja Kamalzaman said awards such as the Putra Brand Awards give a much-needed boost to local brands and should be applauded.

“These are the best of the best of Malaysian brands and Matrade is proud to be part of this event.

“I hope the Putra Brand Awards winners will continue to inspire others to emulate their success and by leveraging Malaysia into the global market,” he said.

The much coveted awards were presented to the winners at the Putra Brand Awards 2022, widely acknowledged as the People’s Choice Awards and is the premier brand award in Malaysia.

The event was held at One World Hotel here yesterday, as people from all walks of life voted for their favourite brands in the local market.

The prestigious Putra Brand Personality Award of the Year 2022 was won by Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah.

Sunway Group also won the Putra Brand of the Year 2022 Award.

The Putra Enterprising Award of the Year 2022 was won by the Mr DIY brand while the Putra Malaysian Marketeer Award of the Year 2022 was won by Sime Darby Property.

Cheah, a renowned educationist, is also Foundation Chancellor of Sunway University in Malaysia and Founding Trustee of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation.

At the event, Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) president Andrew Lee called for less sexualising of genders in advertisements and promotion of brands.

Putra Brand Awards organising chairman Datuk Johnny Mun said 2023 would be more challenging than last year and that the main question would be expanding the finances to invest in brands.

Brand Icons for 2022 were presented to brands with four consecutive Gold Awards.

There were also Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in various categories.

The platinum winners for categories of cameras, IT and office & business equipment was Samsung, communications networks (Maxis), foodstuff (Gardenia), beverage (dairy) (Farm Fresh), beverage (non-alcoholic) (100 Plus), beverage (alcoholic) (Carlsberg), automotive (Toyota) and property development platinum award was won by Sime Darby.

Other categories were apparel and accessories; automotive fuel and lubricants and accessories; banking, investment and insurance, education and learning; health; household products; home improvement, media networks; entertainment; personal, household and outdoor appliances; personal care; retail; restaurants and fast food; transportation, travel and tourism; and e-commerce.

Also present at the event were Sun Media Corporation executive director Adam Ong, Media Prima group managing director Rafiq Razali, Star Media Group CEO Alex Yeow and Astro Malaysia Holdings CEO Henry Tan.

The Putra Brand Awards is the only brand award of, by and for brand managers and owners, aiming to recognise brands that connect and build a strong relationship with consumers.

The winners were chosen through robust consumer research methodology, originally developed by IQ LeanLab, to engage with a minimum of 6,000 consumers in Malaysia to determine the country’s favourite brands in multiple categories.

According to the Putra Brand Awards organisers, in 2022, over 25,000 consumer responses were received during the eight-week long survey period from end-September to mid-November who responded to “invitations-to-participate” advertisements that were published on 60 websites.

Consumer responses are captured directly by research company Ipsos, and thereafter compiled for endorsement by the Board of Governors.

The board consists of the chief executive officer of Matrade, honorary life president of 4As and heads of various media groups, as well as advertiser associations.
