BATU PAHAT: Police have arrested five motorcyclists for riding recklessly at Jalan Pekan Parit Raja-Ayer Hitam here.
Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Ismail Dollah said the group was arrested by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department during “Ops Samseng Jalanan” on Sunday (Jan 15).
“We conducted the operation around Parit Raja from 11pm until 4am and arrested five suspects, aged between 17 and 39.
“The suspects were carrying out dangerous acts such as placing their chin on the speedometer while speeding, changing lanes abruptly, and making dangerous U-turns,” he said in a statement.
ACP Ismail added that their acts could pose a risk to other road users and the suspects themselves.
The suspects are arrested under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, which carries a maximum of five years' jail, RM5,000 to RM15,000 fine for a first-time offender, while repeat offenders face a maximum of 10 years' jail and a fine between RM10,000 and RM20,000.
"The police also seized five motorcycles and a car," he said, adding that the operation was carried out in response to a viral video showing a group of mat rempit racing through the streets of Parit Raja.
