Locations of Chinese New Year traffic hotspots in Selangor identified, say police

GOMBAK: Several locations in six Selangor districts have been identified as traffic congestion hotspots during the coming Chinese New Year celebrations.

Acting Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk S. Sasikala Devi said the districts involved are Sabak Bernam, North Klang, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Ampang Jaya and Gombak.

"For example, in Ampang Jaya, it is along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) while in Gombak, it is at the Gombak toll plaza. We expect traffic to build up closer to Chinese New Year as many in the Klang Valley head to their hometowns," she said.

DCP Sasikala Devi said this when speaking to reporters after launching the state's Ops Selamat operation at the Gombak toll plaza on Monday (Jan 16).

She added that traffic along the Kuala Lumpur -Karak highway is also expected to reach about 171,000 vehicles during the festive period starting Friday (Jan 20).

"It is an estimation of peak traffic compared to the daily average of 100,000 vehicles daily. It will be an increase of 71% in traffic volume on the highway," she said.

DCP Sasikala Devi then added that 828 police officers and personnel will be on duty during the Chinese New Year festive period.

"We will be watching out for six main offences during Ops Selamat including speeding. Summonses will be issued for those who commit traffic offences," she said.

DCP Sasikala Devi said that accidents in the state are in decline as 2,810 accidents were recorded during Ops Selamat held during the festive period last year compared to 4,184 accidents during the same period in 2020, DCP Sasikala Devi said.

"A total of 21 fatal accidents were recorded during the same festive period last year while 22 fatal accidents were recorded in 2020," she added.

DCP Sasikala Devi reminded the public to drive carefully and plan their journeys.

"Get enough rest before starting your journey. Adhere to traffic rules and regulations. Always remember the most important thing is reaching your destination safely," she added.
