KUALA LUMPUR: Actor Sharnaaz Ahmad claimed trial at a Magistrate Court here to a charge of causing hurt to a resident at a condominium in an altercation last year.
Sharnaaz, whose full name is Sharnaaz Ahmad Bazir Ahmad, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed @ Mohamad Saim.
According to the charge sheet, Sharnaaz voluntarily caused hurt on Izzul Islam Awang, 27, at a lift lobby at the entrance of a condominium block at Jalan Dutamas here at 8.30pm on June 16, last year.
He was charged with an offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment of up to a year or fine up to RM2,000 or both, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal offered bail at RM5,000.
Sharnaaz's lawyer Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat, however, sought a lower amount on grounds that his client has given full cooperation throughout the police investigation.
"My client was arrested in June 2022 and only after six months he was charged in court. He was remanded for four days and there is no risk of him absconding.
"The defence intends to send a representation to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) to review the charge," Abu Bakar said.
The lawyer also told the court that Sharnaaz is a single father with a five-year-old son and he is currently in the midst of filming "The Original Gangster", a movie directed by Syamsul Yusuf.
The court fixed bail at RM2,000 in one surety. The case is set for mention on March 6.
Sharnaaz paid the bail.
When met by the press later, the actor said he left it to the court to decide on his case.
"I have to be prepared because things happened and there is a reason for everything," he added.
This is Sharnaaz's second brush with the law. On Sept 25, 2017, he was fined RM1,200 in default of two months jail by the Magistrate's Court after pleading guilty to punching a Bangladeshi employee at a golf club.
