Eight hawker stalls near Penang's City Stadium damaged in blaze

EIGHT hawker lots next to the City Stadium in Jalan Perak, George Town were damaged by fire early Wednesday (Jan 18) morning.

The block, a popular dining spot among locals, caught fire at about 7.25am and firemen rushed to the scene to put it out.

It was learnt that the hawkers there had yet to open for the day when the fire broke out.

Jalan Perak Fire and Rescue Station chief A'azelan Hassan said firemen arrived at the scene at 7.30am and found the fire raging.

"By the time we put it out at 7.52am, eight stalls had sustained about 50% damage," he said, adding that the cause of the fire was being investigated.
