KLANG: Selangor PAS has appointed a non-Muslim as special officer to the party’s state commissioner Datuk Dr Mohd Yunus Hairi.
State PAS secretary Roslan Shahir said Low Lee Leong has been appointed as non-Malay affairs special officer to the state commissioner to assist him in reaching out to the non-Malays.
“He will assist Dr Ahmad Yunus in building ties with the state’s non-Malay community, non-governmental organisations as well as relevant bodies that represent Chinese, Indian and other non-Malay races," said Roslan.
He added that PAS was aware that Selangor was a state made-up of various races and cultures with almost 39% of its residents being non-Malay and non-bumiputra.
“Hence, the appointment is to pave the way for us to serve and represent the interests of everyone in the state," said Roslan.
He added Low’s appointment will also help to highlight PAS’ true image and perspective to the non-Malay community in Selangor.
According to Roslan, it is hoped this will help the non-Malays to better understand PAS so that they will not hesitate to vote for the party and Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming state election.
PAS’ move is reflective of the party’s motivation following its good performance in the recent general election.
The Islamist party had successfully managed to wrest the Kuala Langat, Kapar and Hulu Selangor seats from PKR.
Roslan had stated in a previous interview that PAS received a lot of support from young voters and because of this, it was possible for the party to do well in seats located in the Malay belt constituencies.
Low, who has a degree in aeronautical engineering, joined the PAS supporters club as a life member in 2013.
When contacted, Low declined to comment.
