Ensure labour standards are met despite relaxations given on foreign worker recruitment, employers told

PETALING JAYA: Employers must ensure labour standards are met despite the review process being made later, says Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.

He said the relaxation on acquiring foreign workers was given to expedite the approval process and the review held by the Labour and Immigration Departments will be done between the period of six and seven months.

He also said that employers must provide authentic supporting documents for the worker quota application.

"I also request the employers to provide authentic documents for their foreign worker quota applications because previously, there have been cases of applications involving fake documents," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 19).

The minister also urged employers to comply with the basic aspects related to labour standards by paying monthly salaries according to the minimum wage stipulated and contributing to the employees’ Social Security Organisation (Socso).

"I request that employers give full support to the government's intention in making the Foreign Worker Employment Relaxation Plan a success with employers making quota applications based on actual needs.

"The ministry will ensure that the approval of the quota given can meet the actual needs of the country's workforce.

"It is important for all of us to ensure that the country's image and credibility are guaranteed without compromising on the welfare and rights of workers as recommended by the International Labour Organisation," he added.
