KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor (pic) is hopeful that the Year of the Rabbit will bring prosperity to the state as the people put two years of the Covid-19 pandemic behind them.
"In the Chinese Zodiac, 2023 marks the Year of the Rabbit, the animal associated with peace, prosperity and longevity.
"It also marks a year of expectations (as) we come out of ... a challenging pandemic," he said in his Chinese New Year message on Friday (Jan 20).
Hopefully this year will bring more peace, prosperity and longevity, he added.
He said the Chinese community will be able to celebrate the New Year in an atmosphere of peace, harmony and goodwill with people of other races.
He gave his assurance that the state government will always support the community's cultural activities for the sake of harmony, economic progress and prosperity in Sabah.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew also said the Lunar New Year holds promises of hope, progress and prosperity.
"I believe the worst of it all is over (Covid-19 pandemic), and it is time to rebuild our flagging economy," she said in her message.
"As we usher in the Year of the Rabbit, we will face the challenges ahead with a positive outlook, dynamism and resilience.
"The Water Rabbit also symbolises longevity, peace and harmony which are vital for (togetherness) of our plural society," she added.
Liew said the Lunar New Year was a celebration not only for the Chinese community but also for all other races and diverse cultures in the spirit of unity.
"Unity in diversity is what is unique about Sabah and her people, and we have preserved this distinct feature for decades," she added.
Liew was optimistic that 2023 will be a prosperous year for Malaysia in general and Sabah in particular "as we reopen our doors to tourists from various countries, especially those from China."
"Let us make the most of this year's opportunities. Our goal is attainable if all stakeholders play their role effectively to rejuvenate the industry and maintain Sabah's reputation as a premier tourist destination," she added.
