KOTA KINABALU: There are no plans to rebuild the houses that were washed away by the king tide phenomenon in the coastal squatter village of Kampung Forest in the Sandakan district.

Sandakan MP Vivian Wong said she was doing her best to accommodate Malaysian victims affected in the incident over Christmas at people's housing project (PPR) houses and speed up the process of repairing vacant blocks at the Taman Harmoni PPR.

This was in addition to finding empty houses in other PPRs in Sandakan for affected families, she said.

"I will be in touch with the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) acting president regularly to discuss possible solutions.

"I hope residents will not rebuild their houses at the site of the incident for their own safety," she said in a statement on Friday (Jan 20).

Wong also said any support for Kampung Forest residents to rebuild their houses at the original site was "irresponsible" and "reckless".

High waves caused by the high tide phenomenon swept away some 110 wooden stilt houses at Kampung Forest on Dec 24, displacing 655 people from 114 families.
