Former Meru assemblyman Dr Abd Rani Osman passes away

KLANG: Former Meru assemblyman Dr Abd Rani Osman passed away suddenly on Monday (Jan 23) while on holiday with his family.

According to Selangor PAS secretary Roslan Shahir, Dr Rani was at Carey Island with his family when he collapsed.

“He was rushed to the Banting District Hospital but died on the way," said Roslan.

Dr Abd Rani, 64, a former Selangor PAS commissioner, was apparently living with diabetes and heart disease.

“He campaigned for Kapar MP Dr Halimah Ali in GE15 and appeared quite frail during that time itself," said Roslan.

The medical doctor, who owned a general practice in Meru town, had contested and won the Meru state seat in the 2008 and 2013 general elections.

A jovial man with an infectious sense of humour, Dr Abd Rani would make people burst into laughter whenever he introduced himself as Rani Mukherji (a Bollywood actress.)

Dr Abd Rani was also a very warm man and would carry out medical check-ups on the campaign trail when he was contesting, even asking questions in a smattering of Cantonese and Tamil.

Selangor senior exco member Datuk Teng Chang Khim said he had lost a dear friend with Dr Abd Rani’s passing.

“He is one of the PAS leaders whom I respect. Dr Rani is consistent, firm and loyal to his political struggle," he said, describing the late Dr Abd Rani as humble and friendly.

Current Meru assemblyman Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mokhtar said Dr Abd Rani was a jovial man who was easy to talk to.

“He was a good listener and respected by his multiracial electorate.

“Dr Rani also had some good programmes for the constituency and I am continuing some of them," said Mohd Fakhrulrazi.

Dr Abd Rani leaves behind a widow, four children and 11 grandchildren.

His remains will be brought to the As-Syarif mosque in Meru for prayers and to the Meru Muslim cemetery for burial later on Monday.

Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, through a post on his Twitter, expressed his condolences to Dr Abd Rani's family.
