Floods: Number of evacuees in Johor expected to rise as rain continues


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor is expected to continue to rise due to the ongoing heavy rain.

The State Disaster Management Committee said in a statement that, as of 1pm Tuesday (Jan 24), the number of victims was currently at 298 people from 74 families, with three districts affected.

“The highest number of victims is in Segamat, with 227 people, followed by Kota Tinggi with 41 people and Kluang with 26 people.

“All of the affected areas are showing an increasing trend, and we will update this information from time to time,” it said.

The victims in Segamat are placed at three temporary relief centres (PPS), namely Dewan Serbaguna Pekan Air Panas, Dewan Kampung Sungai Gatom, and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Paya Merah.

Evacuees in Kluang are placed at two PPS, namely SJKC Ping Ming and SMK Seri Perdana.

“The victims in Kota Tinggi are placed at Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas.

“Three rivers in Segamat have also reached the dangerous level namely Sungai Gemas, Sungai Lenik and Sungai Segamat,” it said, adding that the Sungai Kahang in Kluang has also reached the dangerous level.
