KOTA KINABALU: The road from Ranau to Sandakan has been closed to all vehicles because of a landslide early Monday (Jan 30) that left the route blocked by fallen trees.

The Sabah Public Works Department (JKR) said in a statement there was no alternative road for motorists and clearing works were under way.

It said the landslide occurred at KM167.9 Taviu Forest Reserve, Ranau.

"The landslide is believed to be caused by continuous heavy rain last night. Inspection and installation of the Traffic Management Plan have been carried out in the affected area,” it added.

The route is one of the main roads connecting Sabah's west coast and east coast. The interior Ranau district is about 117km east of Kota Kinabalu. – Bernama
