Three fined for illegal World Cup betting

MELAKA: A fisherman from the Portuguese Settlement here is among three men fined a total of RM7,300 by a Magistrate's Court here for betting offences during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Richard Danker, 54; Linus Hilary Pinto, 60; and Lim Soon Boon, 34; pleaded guilty after the charge was read to them before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman on Monday (Jan 30).

According to the charge sheet, Danker, a fisherman, and unemployed Hilary Pinto were found to have been involved in illegal betting during the football tournament in December involving online transactions with mobile phones amounting to RM150,250.

The offence was committed at Portuguese Square at the Portuguese Settlement here between 4am and 4.10am on Dec 14.

Lim, a restaurant worker, was accused of an offence of a similar nature involving the amount of RM75,000 at Jalan Daranjo in the Portuguese Settlement at 6.40pm on Dec 10.

All three, who were unrepresented, were charged under Section 6(1) of the Betting Act 1953 which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 and six months' jail, or both, upon conviction.

The court imposed a fine of RM2,500 on Danker while Hilary Pinto and Lim were fined RM2,400 each.
