Search for missing hiker on Pulau Mawar postponed due to bad weather


MERSING: The search for a 20-year-old student who went missing after hiking alone on Pulau Mawar here has been postponed due to inclement weather.

Endau Fire and Rescue Department operation commander Mohd Alias Hussin said that the operation ended at 7pm on Saturday (Feb 4) and will be continued at 8am Sunday (Feb 5).

“We received the report on Friday (Feb 3), and a total of 36 personnel from various agencies were deployed to the scene to help with the SAR operation.

“The first day of SAR covered the hiking track, and around the island, covering about a 2km wide area, and was postponed at 7.40pm due to unfavourable weather and failing light.

“The second day started at 9am and covered the Pulau Mawar Heaven’s Gate area and Mersing Geo Park, besides the use of three rescue boats from the department and marine police,” he said in a statement here.

Meanwhile, Mersing OCPD Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said the victim, identified as Muhamad Akmal Hakimi Ishak, went missing after going for a hike last Wednesday (Feb 1).

He added that a police report on the disappearance was lodged by his father at the Kluang police station on Friday.

He said the police had received a report about the discovery of a motorcycle believed to belong to the victim near Pulau Mawar at about 11.30am on Friday.
