PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is open towards the idea of the graft busting agency’s top two posts going under the purview of Parliament, says its chief Tan Sri Azam Baki (pic).
Explaining further, Azam said they were open to the move which was mooted by Dewan Rakyat speaker Datuk Johari Abdul, adding that they have however not been called for discussions on the matter.
"Any reformations are up to the government. As yet however, we (MACC) still do not know the terms of mechanisms if this is implemented.
"We are open to the suggestion and have no objections to it. We are also ready to give our opinion on this," he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Azam was responding to Johari’s statement that various reforms were mooted to empower Parliament, including the formation of a special select committee to oversee the appointments of the top officials at ‘sensitive’ government agencies including the MACC and Election Commission (EC).
In an exclusive interview with Berita Harian, Johari was quoted as saying that if the appointment of those holding top posts in ‘sensitive’ agencies came under the purview of Parliament, it would ensure the agencies would act neutrally.
“The request has long been made and I strongly agree with it,” Johari told Berita Harian.
Apart from the MACC and EC, Johari said they were also looking at four to five other agencies, adding that a special select committee would have to be formed to make this a reality.
